IPVA 2022: See if you are entitled to exemption

In this final stretch of the year, some are already concerned about IPVA 2022, one of the first taxes charged at the beginning of the year. And as vehicle prices increase due to raw material shortages, road tax will also become more expensive.

It is not yet known how much this tax will increase, but it is expected that Brazilians will know this value between December and January, when the annual closing of the FIPE table, the index on which the IPVA is based.

Like every year, IPVA 2022 will be no different! The tax amount is based on the vehicle for sale according to the FIPE table, plus a surcharge of 2% to 4% that varies from state to state.

Who is entitled to exemption from IPVA 2022?

This year, people with disabilities, physical or mental limitations and certain chronic illnesses may be exempt from IPVA 2022.

The diseases that justify the right are: amputation, arthrodesis, arthritis, arthrogryposis, post-surgical prostate cancer, heart disease, spine surgery, knee surgery, wrist surgery, shoulder surgery and/or injuries, chondromalacia patella, disability intellectual disability, visual impairment, Parkinson's shortening of limbs, multiple sclerosis, pronounced scoliosis, ankylosing spondylitis, stoma and herniated disc.

Other diseases that are also part of this list are Renal Failure, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), Malformation, Mastectomy, Dwarfism, Diabetic Neuropathies, Stoma, Paralysis, Cerebral Palsy, Poliomyelitis, Severe Spine Problems, Femoral Prosthesis, Internal or External Prosthesis , Quadrantectomy , HIV, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic tendonitis, tetraparesis and tetraplegia.

There is also an exemption for workers who use cars to carry out their work, such as motorcycle taxis, taxi drivers, school transport and minibuses. But, just like the rule for people with disabilities, the exemption for this category varies from state to state.

Exemption varies according to the year of manufacture of the vehicle

  • Vehicles 30 years old or more or vehicles manufactured before 1992: Pernambuco and Santa Catarina;
  • Vehicles 20 years old or more or vehicles manufactured before 2002: Acre, Alagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo and Paraná;
  • Vehicles aged 18 or over or vehicles manufactured before 2004: Mato Grosso;
  • Vehicles 15 years old or more or vehicles manufactured before 2007: Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Pará, Paraíba, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, Sergipe and Tocantins;
  • Vehicles 10 years old or more or vehicles manufactured before 2010: Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte;
    Minas Gerais: Only cars with black registration plates are exempt from the tax;
    Roraima: Agricultural vehicles, motorcycles up to 160cc, taxis, vehicles owned by people with disabilities and ambulances are exempt from IPVA.
